Notes

Best Substitutes for Coconut Oil in Homemade Chocolate:

1. Cocoa Butter

  • Best option if you want a shelf-stable, snappable chocolate bar.
  • Use the same amount (1:1 substitute).

2. Butter (unsalted)

  • Not dairy-free and will need to store chocolate in the fridge.
  • Use same amount (1:1 substitute).

3. Ghee (clarified butter)

  • Shelf-stable, and lower in lactose than butter.
  • Use same amount (1:1 substitute).

4. Avocado Oil or Olive Oil

  • Adds healthy fats but makes soft chocolate – must keep refrigerated.
  • Use slightly less: about 3 Tbsp oil for every 1/4 cup coconut oil.

5. Nut Butters (for soft fudge-style chocolate)

  • Use peanut butter, almond butter, or sunflower seed butter.
  • Combine with a bit of melted chocolate or cocoa butter to firm it up.
  • Use same amount (1:1 substitute).
