Smoothies can be one of the easiest ways to meet your daily fruit and veggie needs and fuel your body — when they’re built intentionally. Instead of tossing random ingredients into a blender or relying on sugar-heavy recipes, this build-your-own smoothie method helps you create smoothies that support energy, digestion, blood sugar balance, and fullness while also tasting sooo good!!!
This guide walks you through four simple steps to build a balanced smoothie, followed by 10 ready-to-blend recipes you can rotate through the week.

The Build-Your-Own Smoothie Formula
Step 1: Pick a Base (1 cup)
This provides hydration and helps everything blend smoothly.
Choose one:
- Skim milk
- Almond milk
- Coconut milk
- Soy milk
- Water
- Coconut water
- 100% Fruit juice
- Brewed tea (hot or iced)
- Brewed coffee
Tip: Milk adds extra protein; coconut water or juice adds quick carbohydrates for energy and helps with replenishing electrolytes.
Step 2: Pick a Fruit (1 cup)
Fresh or frozen
- Apple
- Banana
- Blackberries
- Blueberries
- Cherries
- Grapefruit
- Kiwi
- Mango
- Melon
- Orange
- Peach
- Pear
- Pineapple
- Raspberries
- Strawberries
Tip: Choose frozen fruits to make the smoothies more icy. Also, stock up on fresh fruits during the summer and cut and store them in freezer bags to use in your smoothies throughout the year (our favorite fruit to cut and store for smoothies is watermelon!)
Step 3: Pick a Vegetable (1 cup)
Fresh or frozen
- Beets
- Broccoli
- Carrots
- Celery
- Cucumbers
- Kale
- Spinach
These must be cooked before blending:
- Butternut squash
- Pumpkin
- Sweet potato
Tip: Same tip as the fruits, purchase fresh vegetables when they are on sale and cut and store them in the freezer to use throughout the year. Also, if any of your produce look wilted but not yet molded, you can freeze these for your smoothies too and reduce food waste!
Step 4: Add Protein, Healthy Fat, & Fiber (Pick 2)
Protein
- Plain or Vanilla Greek yogurt
- Kefir
- Cottage cheese
- Peanut butter or other nut butters
- Whey Protein Powder or Pea Protein Powder
- Collagen Peptides or Alpha-gal Friendly Collagen Peptides
Healthy Fat & Fiber
- Avocado
- Chia seeds
- Ground flaxseed
- Pumpkin seeds
- Oats
